Gastrulation: Fate Maps of Urodeles vs. Xenopus

The fate maps of urodeles (i.e., newts and salamanders) are significantly different from Xenopus. One importnat difference is that surface cells give rise to some mesoderm in urodeles (and some anurans like Rana pipiens), whereas in Xenopus the mesoderm is derived from the deep cells exclusively. The figure on this page allow you to compare the fate maps for urodeles and Xenopus (adapted from Browder et al., 1991).
